Whiplash by Josh Janousky is a cleverly designed card gimmick that can turn a beginner magician into a sleight of hand master in just a few moments.
When you buy Whiplash you get a perfectly made and ready-to-use gimmick on a Bicycle maiden back card. Although it is not your standard rider backed card, it is highly unlikely that anyone at all would notice the slight difference. You can easily use this gimmick with rider back cards. For the many perfectionists among us, you can always buy a maiden backed deck of cards to match. You also get an hour and thirty five minute long password protected downloadable and streaming instructional video taught by Janousky. The instructional video is excellent in all respects. The camera work and lighting is top notch and the instruction itself is perfectly detailed. The camera footage, close-ups, angles and editing was as professional as it gets.
On the instructional video you are taught Janousky’s version of Oil and Water, a sandwich routine, a cards across routine and a monte routine. The Whiplash gimmick makes the impossible possible.
Using the gimmick is almost as easy as holding a card itself. Learning the routines and the various phases will take you a short time and will not require too much practice. This trick is well within the reach of anyone.
While there are no angles to be concerned about, perhaps in some ultra-well lit environments you may not want to brandish your Whiplash. While there is something that is detectible to the naked eye, it is unlikely that your spectators will see what we see as magicians. You cannot hand out the Whiplash gimmick, but Janousky teaches how to deal with the situation in which you want to hand out the cards. The reset is instant. You will need to take care of your Whiplash gimmick or it can bend, fold, get creased or break for rough handling. Although the gimmick is not unlike other gimmicks I have seen before from Mark Mason (and Janousky specifically thanks Mason) its construction and make-up is different. Janousky credits many magicians for his inspiration and contributions.
Janousky said that he used his card daily for over a year before it needed replacing. Janousky also details and demonstrates how to build a new gimmick with any back or repair a damaged gimmick in excruciating detail. At the time of the writing of this review, the whiplash gimmick costs $20. There is no way on earth I would even attempt this intricate process which would take me hours to make and no doubt be very frustrating. When I need to, I am just going to buy a new one!
Although you are taught four extremely amazing routines, that is just the tip of the iceberg with what you can do with this versatile gimmick. Before I even watched the instructional video I was brainstorming about different effects I could do with Whiplash…I love it! This is well worth the investment and it is a great gimmick.
