spRING

spRING is a puzzle that is cleverly packaged as a magic trick, a pocket size linking rings routine that you can use in walk around and in close-up situations.

What you get for your $29.95 purchase is a sturdy cardboard package that is designed to hold the spring and the ring.  And, of course you get a copper colored spring that is about 2 inches tall and about an inch wide.  The solid silver ring is about 3 inches in diameter.  Neither of them are gimmicked and both are very well manufactured.

You also get an excellent 53 minute instructional video taught and performed by the omnipresent Javier Fuenmayor in which Javier teaches the basic routine, various handlings and phases of many possible routines.  His teaching is great, the camera work is super and the video gets a perfect 10!

Interestingly enough, when I first got spRING, I did not know the secret and was not that impressed.  I watched the instructional video and although the live performances did not really wow me (as in, wow!!!! that is awesome!!), the live audiences were going nuts.  Once I learned the secret, I could not put this trick down.  I am performing this trick to myself all the time, trying different handlings and just having fun playing what is essentially a puzzle.

The reactions I have seen from this are from nonchalance to happy amusement and fascination.  I am not sure this is an opener or closer, but it is something that is easy to walk around, the magic can be done in the spectator’s hands and it can be handed out at any time with nothing to find.

There is a tiny little move that you need to do, but Javier teaches it excellently and you will never get caught after you practice it for 2 minutes.

The thing about spRING is that I don’t think it is for everyone.  Some spectators are really not taken by the routine.  I think they see it as a puzzle and not all people are puzzle people.  However, those spectators that like spRING are captivated by it and astonished by the inexplicable magic.

The ad copy states:

“spRing is a long-forgotten puzzle that’s been reworked into one of the most classic and iconic plots in magic – the linking rings.

Imagine being able to effortlessly melt a solid ring into the very coils of a tightly wound spring with a visually pleasing and buttery smooth penetration that’s done without any help of the methods typically seen in the traditional linking rings.

In fact, there is nothing to ditch or hide, and you can hand out spRing immediately before, after, and even during your performance if you so choose.

spRing is incredibly easy to perform – it will take you minutes to understand the secret and only hours to master. It’s also suitable for any type of performance and venue.

Here’s what you get:

  • 2 high quality props
  • 45 minutes of expert instruction that includes a multi-phase routine and many alternative handlings to craft a performance suited for you.
  • Peace of mind of knowing that you’ll never have to hide any gaps or extra rings

spRing has not been made for everyday carry in mind but this is something you’ll want to carry every day!

This is an enigma…
That’s wrapped in a puzzle…
That’s trapped in a spring…

Welcome to Joonas Mengel’s spRing.”

The ad copy says that it was not made for everyday carry, but you can easily carry this in your pocket – especially the inner pocket of a performance jacket or sport coat.  It’s also something that you can pass around in a walk-around situation.

For anyone that likes the idea of spRING, I believe that you will love it.  Even those that are not initially taken by the promotional video, you may get bit by the bug once it is in your hands.

Thanks to Murphy’s Magic for asking me to vet this product and give it my honest review.
